Cold Floor Relief with Crawl Space Insulation

Cold Floors? Get Crawl Space Insulation Installed

Cold floors - When was the last time you thoroughly inspected your crawlspace? The quote “out of sight, out of mind” rings true. Like most people, you might have forgotten the crawlspace beneath your feet. Not maintaining the crawlspace can have negative consequences for your whole house.

A common problem is stepping on a chilly floor on a winter morning despite the thermostat operating at full power. This is a clear indication that your home requires crawlspace insulation, which involves using insulation material to maintain the temperature and quality of air inside the house.

Warm Your Cold Floors With New Insulation

Your floors feel cold because cold air is blowing under your house, and you probably don’t have adequate crawl space insulation. With open foundation vents, cold, frigid air can freely blow in under your house. The best way to warm your floors is to seal your foundation vents and insulate the walls of your crawl space.

Benefits Of Crawl Space Insulation

Enhanced Comfort

Depending on the insulation you have installed, an insulated crawl space can offer different benefits. Crawl space insulation eliminates the cold, drafty feeling coming through the floors and makes the floors feel much more comfortable to the touch.

If you choose to insulate the walls with Rigid Foam Board Insulation via crawl space encapsulation, you get to enjoy several other benefits, including:

  • Prevent Further Moisture Damage
  • Control Mold & Fungal Growth
  • Save Energy (15-20% Savings)
  • Improve Indoor Air Quality
  • Dry out Floor Framing
  • Helps with Insects
  • Peace of Mind

Improve Air Quality

Both ventilated and unventilated crawlspaces allow moisture, dust, and dirt to enter, making them a hospitable breeding ground for pests, rodents, mold, and mildew. When this happens, the quality of air inside the house degrades and can give rise to a plethora of health problems. Insulation limits moisture, pollutants, and other allergens from entering the home and thus improves the air quality inside the house.

The best insulation for air quality is rigid foam board because it does not hold contaminants like fiberglass floor insulation and does not experience “Off-Gassing” like spray foam insulation, which can leave lingering smells for years.

Improve Energy Efficiency

When moisture, dust, and dirt enter your house through the crawlspace, the HVAC system has to work harder to compensate for the change in temperature and air quality. Crawlspace insulation prevents this from happening and makes your HVAC units more efficient. This, in turn, will help you make significant savings on your energy bill.

Our rigid foam board insulation includes a ‘Radiant Barrier’ that traps heat in the crawl space lost by the ductwork. This is where you can experience the highest energy savings and allow your HVAC systems to run more efficiently.

Materials Used In Crawl Space Insulation

Fiberglass Batt Floor Insulation

When moisture, dust, and dirt enter your house through the crawlspace, the HVAC system has to work harder to compensate for the change in temperature and air quality. Crawlspace insulation prevents this from happening and makes your HVAC units more efficient. This, in turn, will help you make significant savings on your energy bill.

Closed-cell Spray Foam

Expanding foam is compressed in disposable cans or large containers and sprayed on the areas inside the crawlspaces that need to be insulated. It is expensive and unfortunately, it can leave behind odors, known as ‘Off-Gassing’. This musty smell can linger with the home indefinitely. Also, it’s nearly impossible to remove, which is necessary if structural repairs are ever needed. For these reasons, we do NOT recommend closed-cell spray foam in crawl spaces.

Rigid Foam Board

Rigid Foam Insulation is installed on crawlspace walls by carefully shaping the 4’x’8′ sheets of foam board and gluing them to the walls. These insulation panels are made up of a close-cell insulation design. Rigid foam costs comparatively less than spray foam and possesses an R-value equivalent to its counterpart. It is waterproof and creates a vapor barrier to prevent moisture entering crawlspaces. It also traps heat lost from the ductwork in the crawl space, leading to energy savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my floors cold, especially over the crawl space?

Cold floors are often caused by insufficient insulation, air leaks, drafts, humidity, and the thermal properties of unsealed or poorly insulated crawl spaces. Cold air from outside or from unheated areas seeps in through gaps, vents, or lack of insulation, leading to discomfort and increased heating costs.

What causes the floors above crawl spaces to feel cold?

  • Poor Insulation: Lack of proper wall or floor insulation allows cold air to seep through.
  • Air Leaks: Gaps around vents, doors, or foundation cracks draw cold outdoor air into the space.
  • Humidity and Moisture: Moisture in the crawl space lowers the temperature of the air and materials.
  • Stack Effect: Warm air escapes from the home, pulling cold air from the crawl space upward.
  • Unsealed or open vents: Many older homes have vents that introduce cold air directly into the crawl space, which then affects the floors above.

How can I make my floors warmer?

  • Encapsulate your crawl space: Seal it with a vapor barrier, insulated walls, sealed vents, and a dehumidifier.
  • Add insulation: Install proper wall or floor insulation to prevent heat loss.
  • Air seal your home: Seal leaks around doors, windows, and foundation cracks.
  • Improve ventilation and drainage: Proper drainage prevents ground moisture and reduces cold drafts.
  • Change flooring: Use carpet over heated flooring, or add radiant heating systems for long-term warmth.

What are permanent solutions to cold floors?

  • Crawl space encapsulation: Creates a sealed, moisture-controlled environment with insulated walls and floors.
  • Insulate properly: Insulate walls or floors, ensuring ducts are also insulated to prevent heat loss.
  • Air sealing: Seal leaks to prevent cold drafts entering the home from the crawl space.
  • Install radiant heating: A high-cost but effective system that heats the floors directly.

What are the common causes of uninsulated or cold floors?

  • Lack of insulation during construction or previous poor insulation installation.
  • Sagging or damaged fiberglass insulation that has fallen.
  • Improper application—insulation in the wrong place (e.g., on ceiling instead of walls).
  • Mechanical ductwork exposed to cold air, reducing efficiency.
  • Ventilation systems that allow outside air to enter the crawl space freely.

How does poor insulation contribute to cold floors?

Without insulation, heat easily escapes from living areas into the crawl space, lowering the temperature of the floors. Insulation blocks heat transfer and reduces drafts, keeping the floors warmer.

Can upgrading insulation or sealing leaks solve cold floors?

Yes. Proper insulation and sealing all leaks and vents significantly reduce heat loss and drafts, making floors warmer and more energy-efficient.

Is it worth insulating my crawl space?

Absolutely. Insulating reduces drafts, increases comfort, lowers energy bills, and prevents moisture-related issues like mold and wood rot. Encapsulation and insulation are considered long-term investments in home comfort and value.

How do I know if my crawl space needs repairs for cold floors?

Signs include:

  • Persistent cold or uneven floors
  • High energy bills
  • Visible gaps or open vents
  • Sagging or damaged insulation
  • Drafts or air leaks around foundation vents or cracks
  • Condensation or moisture issues underneath the home.
